A three-day photography exhibition on Kukkarahalli lake biodiversity began in the city on Friday.
Organised by Kukkarahalli Kere Ulisi Samithi, which is working on the forefront to save the lake from ‘development’, the objective is to the highlight the treasure trove of biodiversity harboured by the natural body that is under threat. The expo, being held at Chai Patthe, No.46, Vishwamanava Double Road, Sarawathipuram, was inaugurated by documentary filmmakers Krupakar and Senani. It features rare images of the flora and fauna of the lake including those of a rare frog that was recorded for the first time at the lake, many rare birds that roost here in winter, a variety of spiders, etc., all of which are unique to the lake’s ecosystem.
Besides the exhibition, there will be talks on the uniqueness of Kukkarahalli lake from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Bird expert P. Guruprasad will speak about the biodiversity of the lake on January 27 and Prof.U.N. Ravikumar, an environmentalist, will deliver a talk on Kukkarahalli Lake Conservation on January 28.
Major lung space
Located in the heart of the city, the lake is reckoned to be the pride of Mysuru and is a major lung space for the city. It has also been recognised as an Important Bird Area in view of the rich diversity of the local environment. Its habitat has been studied by environmentalists and amateur naturalists since 1980.
As per records, the lake harbours 184 species of birds including 45 species that are migratory in nature, 6 species of bats, 7 species of frogs, and 85 species of butterflies, among others.
