PDS rice racket busted

A racket involving truck drivers, who were manipulating with the weight of rice bags meant for supply through public distribution system, was busted in Chickballapur.

The drivers allegedly used to add stones to the rice bags to increase its weight, thus causing huge loss to the government, according to the Food and Civil Supplies Department authorities.

Locals grew suspicious when they noticed stones inside three trucks that arrived at the APMC yard for unloading on Wednesday. When they questioned the drivers, they failed to give a proper reply, prompting the public to inform the police and the food and civil supplies authorities.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the truck drivers used to stop the vehicles on the way to Chickballapur after getting the rice bags loaded at Whitefield, Bengaluru. They then added stones into the bags. The police said that all the drivers fled the scene before they reached the yard.

The incident of stealing the rice bags and keeping stones equivalent to its weight was unknown to us. Culprits will be traced and steps will be taken to stop recurrence of such cases Srinivasaiah, Deputy Director, Food and Civil Supplies Dept., Chickballapur
