A case of suspected honour killing has come to light two months after a 19-year-old girl, who was planning to elope with a boy belonging to a different caste, was allegedly murdered by her father in Dadadahalli village in H.D. Kote taluk near here.
The police said the victim Shobha, daughter of Gurusidde Gowda, a resident of Parvathipura in Nanjangud, was in love with Krishna of the same village for the last few years. Her family, however, was against this relationship as he did not belong to their caste.
Her parents had even shifted her to Dadadahalli, which is Gurusidde’s native village, to prevent her from meeting Krishna. Following this, Shobha had decided to elope with Krishna after meeting him at a function.
Girl fled home
In the last week of April, she fled Dadadahalli to meet Krishna at Mullur village, but her father’s henchmen caught her near Mullur Gate and brought her back.
Meanwhile, Krishna lodged a complaint with the Sargur police in H.D. Kote last week alleging that Shobha had been abducted and suspected that she had been murdered by her father.
The police arrested Gurusidde and his wife Mahadevamma from Ooty on Monday. During interrogation, the police learnt that Gurusidde had assaulted his daughter after she was brought back to Dadadahalli from Mullur Gate. During an argument, Shobha was allegedly hit with a stone by her father, leading to her death, the police said.
The family members cremated the body on the outskirts of the village claiming that Shobha had died after consuming poison. The parents of the girl and two other accused went absconding after the murder. Two separate teams of police had been formed to trace the accused.
Superintendent of Police, Mysuru district, Ravi Channanavar, said the girl’s parents had confessed to the crime. Two more people, who were absconding, will be arrested soon, he said.
Remains exhumed
A team of policemen visited Dadadahalli on Monday and exhumed the remains for forensic tests.
