According to the analytical report, a majority of primary school teachers in the State have completed higher secondary course. About 81 per cent of those in rural areas and 75 per cent in urban areas have completed only higher secondary, and only a small percentage of teachers have completed post-graduation or Ph.Ds, the survey said.
V.P. Niranjan Aradhya said most teachers after completing higher secondary got into teaching and do not end up pursuing higher education.
“Teachers do not pursue higher education after they join service on completion of B.Ed. or D.Ed. as there are no opportunities during training. The government should allow 5 to 10 per cent of teachers to undergo in-service training to ensure that quality improves,” he said.
