Heavy rain that lashed the district over the past week has taken a life and damaged property and crops worth Rs. 50 lakh.
Lachya Naik, a resident of Rampur in Molkalmuru taluk, died after lightning struck him on Friday night. According to reports, more than 78 houses and agriculture and horticulture crops on more than 170 acres of land were damaged.
According to sources in the district administration, the houses that were damaged include one each in Benakanhalli, Bijapur, Biravar, Balegatte, Hireguntnur and Kallenhalli villages and two each in Kalkunte and G.R. Halli. In Challakere taluk one each house in Doddaullarthi, Renukapur, Basapur, Choulur and Nerlkunte were damaged. In Hosadurga taluk, 10 houses were damaged in Kodihalli, five in Sevanagar, five in Yallabhovihatti, eight in Rangavvanhalli, four in Bochenhalli, 10 in Tanegekalli, three in Kainadu, two in Aralhalli, one in S. Nerlkere, two in Kannagundi, four in Matthod and two in Ganjigatte.
Chikjajur town has received a maximum of 221 mm rainfall, Chitradurga 79 mm, Bharamsagar 63 mm, Sirigere 38 mm, Nayakanhatti 54 mm, Hiriyur 32 mm, Molkalmuru 30.1 mm, Rampur 52 mm and H.D. Pura 52 mm.
The officers concerned are conducting a detailed survey of the crop loss and property damage in the district and will submit a detailed report in this regard to government for further action.
Houses damaged
In Ballari, gusty winds that preceded rain damaged several houses. In several localities, including Batri, Shantinagar, Vidyanagar and surrounding places, asbestos and tin sheets of around 30 to 40 houses blew off.
Several trees were uprooted as well as electricity poles, which affected power in the city. A mobile tower collapsed at Hagari Bommanahalli due to rain. With thunder and lightning still continuing, there was a possibility of a downpour during the night.
