Officials told to tackle water scarcity in rural areas

March 25, 2012 12:41 am | Updated 12:41 am IST - YADGIR:

Regional Commissioner K. Rathnaprabha has directed officials of the Yadgir Zilla Panchayat to tackle the drinking water scarcity in rural areas of the district. She was speaking to presspersons here on Thursday after reviewing the drinking water situation in the district with senior officials in the district administration and the zilla panchayat.

Ms. Rathnaprabha said that 248 villages were facing a severe shortage of drinking water and that officials had been directed to repair all defunct borewells in these villages.

She said two weeks' time had been given to the officials of the engineering division of the zilla panchayat to attend to these problems. “Officials of the Gulbarga Electricity Supply Company have also been directed to provide electricity connections to pending drinking water supply projects and replace defunct transformers,” Ms. Rathnaprabha said.

She took serious exception to the delay in commissioning the multi-village drinking water project of the Wadagera-Kandalli water supply scheme in Shahpur taluk of the district and directed Gescom officials to provide electricity connections to the project immediately. “The project should be commissioned within 15 days,” Ms. Rathnaprabha said.

She urged officials to establish control rooms at the district and taluk headquarters to help people file complaints. “The district administration should appoint nodal officers for all the control rooms and the mobile-phone numbers of the officers should be made available to the people to help them file complaints,” Ms. Rathnaprabha said.

Reacting to media reports about illegal transportation of fodder from Yadgir to Andhra Pradesh, she said that officials of the departments of Revenue and Animal Husbandry should prevent illegal fodder movement out of the district.

Deputy Commissioner Gurneet Tej Menon and zilla panchayat Chief Executive Officer Abdul Rab were present.
