Activists of the National Students Union of India (NSUI) on Thursday staged a protest here demanding enhancement in the intake of students for B.Com course in the Government Sahyadri College, a unit college of Kuvempu University here.
Addressing the protest meet, K. Chethan, secretary of the NSUI State unit, said that in the wake of increase in the number of students opting for B.Com course in the 2014-15 academic year, a total of 700 students got enrolled for the first year B.Com course at Sahyadri College against the sanctioned strength of 350.
It was unfortunate that the college had decided to limit the intake for B.Com course to the sanctioned strength of 350 this year.
Owing to the reduction in the number of seats, the students were forced to go to private colleges, which were collecting huge donation and fees. Poor students, who could not afford the heavy donation and fees charged by private colleges, were bidding adieu to education, he said.
The Academic Council of Kuvempu University had permitted enrolment of students who had passed ITI course to B.Com course.
However, admission to B.Com course was denied to ITI candidates at Sahyadri College, he said.
