Major roads and junctions in the central business district (CBD) of Mysuru will soon have readymade concrete medians. The existing steel barricades will be replaced by concrete blocks as road dividers.

In most places, the steel barricades have been damaged and do not gel with the city’s profile, especially in the Core Heritage Zone (CHZ). Hence, the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) has decided to replace them. The plan has got the consent from the Mysuru City Police, with MCC Commissioner C.G. Betsurmath and Police Commissioner B. Dayanand inspecting major roads.

They inspected the medians and road barricades which are in bad shape, particularly the steel barricades. Sample blocks were put up near K.R. Circle on Tuesday.

“The Police Commissioner is satisfied with the MCC’s plan and suggested that the concrete medians can replace steel barricades on key roads and junctions,” said Dr. Betsurmath. Speaking to TheHindu , Dr. Betsurmath said the length of each concrete block is 6 ft, with a height of 2 ft and breadth of 1.5 ft.

Besides improving the beauty of the surrounding, they also prevent pedestrians from crossing the road.

“We will start the work on laying the blocks on Sayyaji Rao Road starting from Sanskrit Pathashala passing through the office of MCC,” he said.

Barring Raja Marga, where some development works had been undertaken, other major roads and junctions will be covered. A stretch of D. Urs Road from K.R. Circle will also be covered.

Dr. Betsurmath said the concrete median will also be put up on the procession route – from Sri Chamarajendra Circle via Sayyaji Rao Road to Bannimantap – later on.

“During the Dasara procession, the blocks can be removed and reassembled later asis being done in case of steel barricades. The blocks can be lifted using earth movers,” he replied.

Besides improving the beauty of the surrounding, the concrete medians prevent pedestrians from crossing the road, thereby prioritizing road safety.
