No hope of getting more funds from Centre, says Kumaraswamy

Former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, who visited flood-hit areas of Mudigere on Sunday, said there is hardly any chance of getting further relief from the Centre for flood relief works.

Speaking to presspersons at Kalasa in Mudigere taluk, he said, “It seems what the Centre has released now could be the last. I do not think it will release more funds.”

He also criticised the State government for its statements on the status of the State treasury. “Some people in the ruling party say the treasury is empty, while others say it is full. They are misleading the public,” he said. He claimed that if he were still in power, there would have been no problem in providing relief to flood victims. Last year, when parts of Kodagu witnessed floods, the government provided adequate funds and built houses for victims, Mr. Kumaraswamy said. The former Chief Minister also alleged that there was corruption in the provision of relief to flood-hit people. “Those who voted for the BJP are getting relief. Some are making money in providing relief.”

Reacting to Congress leader Cheluvarayaswamy’s statement asking him to stage a protest in front of Vidhana Soudha over funds for Mandya, the JD(S) leader said he does not require the Congress leader’s suggestions. “Let him ask Siddaramaiah to stage a protest. The JD(S) has only 34 MLAs while the Congress has got 70.”

Mr. Kumaraswamy visited the family of Chandre Gowda, the farmer who committed suicide over delay in getting compensation for the crop loss he suffered during heavy rains.
