The Revenue Department and the Kodagu district administration will conduct mock drills on various disaster scenarios on May 28 and 29 in areas that were ravaged by landslides and floods during monsoon last year.

This is to instil confidence among the local community who were badly affected by the last year’s natural calamity and nurture fears that a similar misfortune may strike again, with the onset of south west monsoon slated around the first week of June.

The mock drills will involve personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and its team will be station in a few vulnerable areas to ensure safe evacuation of the residents if need be. The team will stay on till the withdrawal of monsoon around September.

The mock drills will be conducted by personnel drawn from the Karnataka Fire Department, Karnataka Civil Defence and various other stakeholders besides the NDRF. The local police, Forest Department, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), civil defence force, and Dogra Regiment will also be part of the exercise.

Committees formed

Meanwhile, the Kodagu district administration has taken various precautionary measures besides administering training for village-level officials ahead of the onset of monsoon on rescue and relief operations.

The authorities have also constituted 8 committees under different nodal officers to ensure that the response time for rescue and relief was not only minimal but the entire operation, if necessary, was smooth and goes on without any hitches.

There is an emergency and relief response and recovery committee besides an Early Warning and Evacuation Committee, Search and Rescue Committee, Shelter Management Committee, covering all aspects related to rescue and relief, each committee vested with the responsibility of handling all aspects of rescue and relief.

The Kodagu district administration has said in a release that the south west monsoon was likely to be delayed by 5 days as per the Indian Meteorological Department’s advisory and could advance to Kodagu by June 6.

The authorities have said that based on the report of the GSI, 13 areas have been identified for vulnerability and men and material have been deployed to handle any exigency during the monsoon. The staff on ground are constantly interacting with the local community about the preparedness, to infuse confidence among the people.

The local people have been apprised of their course of action and the steps they should take for their safety in case of any emergency. People living in remote locations may also call the emergency toll free number 1077 or 08272-2221077 for any updates and advance warning.
