The chain that rotates the timer has worn out and needs to be repaired, says official

The clock at the Silver Jubilee Clock Tower, one of the prized landmarks in the city, has been non-functional for over two weeks owing to a technical snag.

Fondly called ‘Dodda Gadiyara’, the 92-ft tall monument was built in 1927 to commemorate the silver jubilee of Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar’s rule. It is also an important tourist attraction.

Located opposite the majestic Town Hall, the tower is also stone’s throw away from the iconic palace. Together, the three structures are the key constituents of the Core Heritage Zone.

Locals said the clock had not been showing time for over two weeks. It stopped at 10.50 hours.

Mysuru City Corporation is caretaker of the clock tower, which is listed as a heritage monument.

Replacing the chain

City corporation commissioner C.G. Betsurmath told The Hindu that the chain that rotates the timer had worn out and needed to be replaced.

“As a spare piece was not available here, efforts are on to get a new one from Bengaluru. A technician has been asked to get the clock repaired at the earliest,” the commissioner said.

Horologist Chandrashekar Iyer, who has been watching the clock tower since his childhood, said the clock tower had been showing time for the people of Mysuru for many decades.

“The city’s timekeeper needs to be brought back to life as history is attached with this architectural marvel,” he said.

On the snag, Mr. Iyer said, “It is possible for the clock to come to a halt if the chain gets worn out. It’s an age-old clock and a new chain can restore it.”

Mr. Iyer, who has done a lot of research on the subject, said the clock tower was the State’s biggest such structure.

The height makes it visible from a long distance.
