hief Executive Officer of the Mysuru Zilla Panchayat, Shivashankar, has said that lack of commitment on the part of most teachers of high schools was the main reason for poor results in SSLC examination this year. He said teachers of schools which recorded poor results been served notices.
Speaking at the zilla panchayat general body meeting on Monday, Mr. Shivashankar, while expressing his serious concern over the results, said Mysuru district, which was in eighth position last year had been pushed to 21st position.
Describing it as abysmal performance, he said that after serious assessment, it was realised that lack of commitment and “indifferent attitude” among teachers were the main reasons for dismal results this year.
Mr. Shivashankar said he that it had been decided to take measures to provide training to teachers for a few days during holidays and motivate them to prepare students well for the next examination.
He said teachers would be made responsible for the results and they would be cautioned of disciplinary action if they did not prepare students well.
There was uproar in the meeting and members cutting across the party lines expressed their resentment over the poor results and demanded the CEO recommend the government to transfer the Deputy Director of Public Instruction, and appoint an “efficient officer” instead.
The members said that Mysuru being the home district of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and also of the Education Minister, had been relegated to 21st place in the State, and that Education Department officials had failed to monitor the work of teachers.
Earlier, Venkataswamy, zilla panchayat member from H.D. Kote, while tabling a call attention notice, said that most high schools in H.D. Kote where SC, ST and backward class communities resided, did not have the required number of teachers. Over 73 posts of high school teachers were laying vacant, he said.
How could one expect students to pass the examination without being tutored by teachers, he asked, and added that many students discouraged by the absence of teachers had discontinued education.
He said that 101 teachers posts were sanctioned to Mysuru district, and alleged that the DDPI instead of filling posts where required, had appointed teachers to taluks such as K.R. Nagar and Hunsur.
Pushpa Amarnath, member and former president of Mysuru Zilla Panchayat, asked the CEO to direct the Education Department to prepare ‘unsuccessful students” for the June supplementary examination, and ensure that they continue pursuing education.
Zilla panchayat president Nayeema Sultana was present.
