Mysuru researcher to assist project in South Africa

A researcher from Mysuru will be assisting an ongoing joint collaborative research project being carried out at the Stellenbosch University, Stellenbosch in South Africa.

S. Nanjunda Swamy, associate professor, Department of Biotechnology, Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering (SJCE), Mysuru, will be visiting Dr. Ben Loos Laboratory, Department of Physiology, Stellenbosch University, in connection with the project — Targeting autophagy for brain cancer drug discovery. He is working in the area of cancer drug discovery programme. The project is jointly funded by the Department of Science and Technology, India, and the National Research Foundation, South Africa.

From India’s side, the project also involves the expertise of Basappa, co-investigator and assistant professor, Department of Chemistry, Bangalore University.

The research work will focus on development of novel autophagy modulator to induce apoptosis in brain cancer cells, which may have significant potential for clinical trials targeting brain cancer, a press release said.

The release said the project is expected to provide a substantial framework for training and human capital development between two countries and also exchange of scientists and research students.

Punya Madguni Bhat, junior research fellow in the project, is also visiting South Africa to assist the project.
