Mysuru lad to take part in chess tourney in Spain

Mysuru lad M.S. Thejkumar will be participating in the Chess Catalan Circuit at Spain to be held between June 25 and August 30.

Thejkumar, who is also the highest-ranked chess player from Karnataka and an employee of South Western Railways, will be taking part in six tournaments in Spain in his pursuit to attain the Grandmaster title.

According to a statement here, Thejkumar, with a rating of 2461, will be playing in the XXIII Open International Circuit De Montcada at Montcada i Reixac, Spain, from June 25 to July 3.

 He is seeded 12th in the tournament, which has a prize money of 7,200 Euros. Grandmaster Grivovyan Karen H. from Armenia is the top-seeded player.

Eleven GMs

Eleven Grandmasters will be playing in the tournament, which also features 19 other Indian players including Swapnil S. Dhopade, Das Sayantan, Sundar Rajan Kidambi, Gagare Shardul, S. Satyapragyan and Konguvel P.

Thejkumar’s visit to Spain has been sponsored by Yashasvi Shankar of Saanvi Technologies, USA, www.mysoresport.com and the Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports, Government of Karnataka, said the press release.

Campaign

Thejkumar, who left for Barcelona on Sunday, will begin his campaign with the XXIII Open International Circuit De Montcada from June 25. Later, he will be playing in the XXXVIII Open de Barbera Chess tourney, the XVII Open de Sant Marti chess tourney, XVI Open de Bandalona and XVII Open de Sants chess tourney, the statement added.
