Mungaru Samskritika Raichur Habba, annual sports and cultural festival organised by Munnuru Kaapu community to celebrate “Karahunnime” during kharif sowing season, would begin on June 1.

Addressing a media conference here on Saturday, former MLA and Munnuru Kaapu community leader A. Papareddy announced that Raichur In-charge Minister Dr. Sharan Prakash Patil would flag off the three-day event and Raichur Lok Sabha member B.V. Naik would participate as chief guest. Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj would inaugurate the concluding day events on June 3, he added.

As per the details provided by Papareddy, several sport competitions, including bullocks pulling heavy rectangular boulder, Indian wrestling and traditional weight lifting, apart from cultural performances, would be organised in the event.

"The competition of boulder-pulling by a pair of bullock would continue to be a major attraction of the event this year also," he said.

The weight of the boulder on the first day would be 1.5 tonnes and the competition would be reserved for the bullock pairs from Karnataka only. The weight of the boulder would be increased to 2 tonnes and 2.5 tonnes respectively for second and third day competitions which would be open to all bullock pairs including those from outside Karnataka.

"More than 45 pairs of bullock from Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Maharashtra are expected to participate in the event. The winning bullock pairs would be awarded with cash prizes,” he said.
