MSP sought for ginger, maize and millets

MLC says farmers are worried over steep fall in prices

Member of Legislative Council Patel Shivaram on Friday appealed to the State government to ensure that growers of maize, millets, ginger and tomato get remunerative prices this year. The market prices of these products had fallen rendering farmers worried about incurring loss, he said at a press conference here.

Last year, the price of maize was Rs. 1,600 a quintal. At present, the price of maize is less than Rs. 1,000 a quintal. The price of millets had come down to Rs. 1,600 to Rs. 1,800 a quintal against Rs. 2,300 a quintal of last year. “The government should take measures to boost the morale of farmers by announcing reasonable support prices for these products,” he said.

He said, even potato growers had suffered huge losses as the fungal infection had adversely affected the yield this year too.
