Model code of conduct comes into force today

May 10, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:44 am IST - Vijayapura:

With the elections to 210 gram panchayats of five taluks in the district on May 29, the Model Code of Conduct will be imposed on Sunday.

Besides 199 old gram panchayats, 21 new ones will go to polls. No election will be held in two gram panchayats due to a stay on the election by the court and one gram panchayat will not go to polls since its term has not ended.

Seven other gram panchayats have been upgraded to town panchayats and they will also not see elections.

The poll code will remain effective in all gram panchayats barring all taluk panchayats, town panchayats, municipalities and corporations.

There is no restriction on holding general body meeting of taluk panchayats and zilla panchayats during the period but no new schemes can be announced.

The norms also does not prevent officials for taking new work related to drinking water in drought-hit areas but these schemes should not be disclosed in public or for any political gains, the norms said.

The poll code also bars any person affiliated to any political party from making any announcements that violate the code in any religious meetings or congregations.
