Mobile phone menace in Karnataka jails

February 07, 2012 10:55 am | Updated 10:55 am IST - BANGALORE:

The State government is planning to build watch towers and install mobile phone jammers in jails across the State to check illegal use of mobile phones by prison inmates.

Minister for Social Welfare and Prisons A. Narayanaswamy told the Legislative Council on Monday that mobile phones are being used by the jail inmates in gross violation of rules. Despite measures to enforce the ban in jails, several mobiles make their way into jail premises and land into the hands of the inmates. There was a dire need to keep vigil of the jails to prevent entry of banned items.

He said the department would also seek the expertise of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) to check the menace.
