Local people staging a protest following the death of the farmer on the Bangalore–Mysore highway in Ramanagaram on Thursday.

A farmer was killed on the spot and his mother-in-law injured when a goods autorickshaw rammed the motorcycle by which they were travelling on the Bangalore–Mysore highway, outside the Agricultural Produce Marketing Committee yard, in Ramanagaram on Thursday.

The victim has been identified as Naganna of Channapatna. The injured, Mahadevamma, was shifted to the government hospital in Ramanagaram.

The goods vehicle driver abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene.

Following the accident, irate residents burnt the vehicle and also threw stones at Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation buses. Two buses were damaged.

Traffic on the highway came to a standstill for nearly an hour. The police resorted to lathi-charge to bring the situation under control.

The Ramanagaram police have registered a case.
