Sharanappa Mattur, MLC, appealed the Raichur district administration to make sure that every schools in the district had sufficient number of toilets.

He was delivering the inaugural address at the second educational conference at Pundit Siddarama Jambaladinni auditorium here on Friday. The event was organised by Karnataka State High School Teachers’ Association.

Mr. Mattur said that students, particularly girls, and even teachers in many schools across the district were finding it difficult to answer nature’s call as the schools did not have toilets. “The district administration should address the issue on priority basis,” he said.

Warning about possible catastrophes that old and crumbling school buildings in many villages could cause, Mr. Mattur appealed the Deputy Commissioner to pay his immediate attention to make proper alternative arrangement before it was too late.

Deputy Commissioner S. Sasikanth Senthil, who participated in the conference as chief guest, assured his complete support to the schools and teaching community in their efforts to make progressive strides in the sphere of education.

“There is no dearth of funds either for building toilets or for constructing good school buildings. It is the will that is lacking. Come up with concrete proposals, I will get it done with special interest,” he said.

He stressed the need of changing the students’ mindset and culture in the case of sanitation issues. “Government can release funds and get sufficient number of toilets at each school. It cannot, however, persuade each student to use it. It cannot teach each one of them as to how to maintain it. It is where teachers’ role is greatly felt,” he said.

Terming neutrality, transparency and anonymity as three essential qualities of any public servant, he called upon the to adopt them in their public life.

Zilla Panchayat President Sarojamma Basavaraj, Vice President Jafer Ali Patel, City Municipal Council president Mahadevamma Tayanna Naik, Deputy Director of Public Instruction Ramanjaneya, Teachers’ Association president Moin-ul-Haq and others were present.
