MLA proposes third dam across the Swarna

Pramod Madhwaraj, MLA, said on Friday that only a third dam across the Swarna will solve the water requirements of Udupi city.

The water level in the Baje dam at Baje village across the Swarna stood at 3.86 metres on Friday. Last year, on the same day, the water level was 4.02 metres. Water is now being supplied to the city on alternate days.

Speaking to presspersons at the Baje dam site, Mr. Madhwaraj said that the water flow into the river stopped around February 3. The water stored in the Baje Dam (Swarna River First Stage) and at Shiroor Dam (Swarna Second Stage) was enough to meet the water requirements of the city for 90 days. But the city required water for 120 days from February.

Besides, nearly 2,000 to 3,000 tap water connections were being added in the city annually. This made it necessary to have a third dam across the Swarna at the end point at Manipal. The third dam would make up the shortfall of the remaining 30 days.

“We are now dependent on pre-monsoon showers in the Western Ghats to make up the shortfall,” he said.

Udupi was expected to get Rs. 200 crore under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation scheme. Money from the scheme would be used for the construction of the third dam.

There was problem of water distribution for houses in the high-lying areas. The water pressure was not enough to be supplied to these areas. This meant that more over-head tanks had to be constructed to improve water supply.

Water supply

An amount of Rs. 100 crore would be spent from Karnataka Urban Development and Coastal Environment Management Project for improving water supply in the city, while Rs. 200 crore under the same scheme would be spent to improve underground drainage system in Manipal, Kodavoor and Putturu areas.

A detailed project report for laying the underground drainage lines was ready.

But it required some private land to lay the lines in these areas.

All efforts would be made to reach negotiated settlement with land owners. Failing which land acquisition process would be initiated, Mr. Madhwaraj said.

Meenakshi Bannanje, president of the Udupi City Municipal Council, and other councillors, were present.
