‘It will help tackle unemployment problem among the educated youth’

Minister C.S. Shivalli has said that he would prioritise achieving industrial development in Dharwad district to tackle unemployment problem among the educated youth.

Participating in a Meet-the-Press programme at the Press Club here on Thursday, Mr. Shivalli said that unless industries were developed in this region, it would not be possible to provide proper jobs to educated youth. Along with the rise in access to higher and technical education, employment opportunities too need to be created. “I have seen large numbers of candidates with professional education degrees rendered jobless mainly due to lack of opportunities. Therefore, I will focus on developing large and small scale industries and also creating industry-friendly atmosphere by improving infrastructure,” he said.

To a query, Mr. Shivalli said that he would shortly convene a meeting of officials concerned and work on designing an action plan for industrial and infrastructure development in the district in consultation with the Deputy Commissioner. Suitable land for development of industries would be identified. Efforts would be made to establish export-oriented manufacturing units. Both private and public sector units would be encouraged to set up their units here, he said.

To tackle water shortage and ensure sufficient availability of water for agricultural purposes, a plan would be chalked out to utilise the waters of the Bennihalla rivulet. Along with taking up repair works of the existing canals, check dams would be constructed at specified locations to improve irrigation, he said and added that he would use his office to see that the court order on sharing of the Mahadayi river water was implemented at the earliest.

To a query on the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation expressing inability to bear 30 % of the cost of running Indira Canteens to provide food at subsidised prices, Mr. Shivalli said that somehow the government has assured bearing 80 % of the cost of running these canteens.

If the municipal corporation is not in a position to contribute its share, the government would be asked to bear the entire cost. But, the canteens would not be closed down, he added.

Mr. Shivalli, who is yet to be allocated a portfolio, said that he would not demand any particular portfolio but would prefer having a portfolio where there is scope to take up people-oriented works. Hubballi-Dharwad East MLA Abbayya Prasad, Congress leaders Ismail Tamatagar and Mahesh Nalwad and others were present.
