Minister in-charge of Mysuru district G.T. Deve Gowda on Sunday promised to install pure drinking water units in many villages of Chamundeshwari Assembly constituency.

Mr. Gowda, who is also Minister for Higher Education, was speaking after inaugurating a drinking water project at a cost of ₹12 lakh in Marati Kyathanahalli in Chamundeshwari Assembly segment in Mysuru on Sunday.

The constituency, on the outskirts of Mysuru city, has been dealing with many complaints of drinking water scarcity. The scarcity atop Chamundi Hills and Tavarekatte at the foot of the hillock came under focus during the Revenue Minister R.V. Deshpande’s recent visit to city.

Cries to address the issue in villages here had grown louder in the summer when drinking water was supplied to several parts through tankers.

Mr. Gowda, who defeated former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in last year’s Assembly elections, has assured provision of drinking water to the villages. Pure drinking water units with Reverse Osmosis (RO) plants have been set up in many parts by the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC).

These RO plants dispense 20 litres of pure drinking water for ₹5. To obtain one litre, consumers have to pay ₹2. Most RO plants dispense water when consumers insert coins in the machine slots.

The setting up of such RO plants in many wards of MCC saw many people, who were otherwise buying packaged drinking water in 20 litre cans by paying ₹35 to 40, making a beeline to the plants.

Mr. Gowda said he had already taken up several developmental works in the constituency including asphalting of roads, construction of drains, etc. He said he will make similar efforts to address the drinking water problems in the constituency. “I don’t want anybody to face drinking water problem in the constituency,” Mr Gowda reiterated.

Gram Panchayat Bhavan

Mr Gowda even laid the foundation stone for the construction of a Gram Panchayat Bhavan in Marati Kyathanahalli at a cost of ₹46 lakh. He later conducted an inspection of the on-going road works and drainage works in the village and directed the Department of Public Works officials to expedite the work.

Then, Mr. Gowda proceeded to Maddur village in Jayapura hobli and unveiled a bust of B.R. Ambedkar.

Lok Sabha MP Pratap Simha, ZP member Beerihundi Basavanna, Mysuru TP Executive Officer Lingarajaiah and tahsildar J. Mahesh were present.
