Parents of over 400 students were a happy lot after their meritorious children got free admission to PU colleges in Bidar on Saturday.

In a unique initiative by the district administration, around 50 colleges in the district offered to provide free seats to students from poor families, who cleared an admission test conducted last week. Counselling was held in the Rangamandir on Saturday.

Nikita Prakash Hegge, who stood first to the district in the examination, chose Sri Channabasaveshwar Gurukul, Kardyal, in Bhalki taluk. Over 2,000 students had competed in the examination. A total of 700 seats will be distributed to merit students.

Counselling will continue on Sunday when another 300 students will be allowed to choose the seats. Of them, students from Kannada-medium will get 515 seats, Marathi-medium 77, English 63, and Urdu 45.

P.C. Jaffer, Deputy Commissioner, said these 700 boys and girls would be housed in hostels run by different government departments.
