Following stiff opposition from a section of Congress members and the BJP to the sale of over 3,660 acres of land to JSW Steel Ltd., the State government has set up a four-member Cabinet sub-committee headed by Home Minister M.B. Patil to study the government’s proposal to execute its lease-cum-sale land agreement with the company.

Other members of the panel are Cooperation Minister Bandeppa Kashempur, Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister Krishna Byre Gowda, and Social Welfare Minister Priyank Kharge.

The panel has been asked to study the land deal in detail and submit recommendations to the Cabinet on the proposal.

The Cabinet decision to sell land to the company in Sandur taluk of Ballari district had sparked a controversy following a stiff opposition from senior Congress leader H.K. Patil and a few others. Following the Congress leaders’ opposition, the State government decided to reconsider its decision. Mr. H.K. Patil had sought an audit of the land.
