After a prolonged battle for seven years, a Hubballi-based advocate, who lost his wife allegedly due to deficient medical service, has finally got relief after the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission asked the nursing home to pay Rs. 18 lakh as compensation.
Shreepad Dattatreya Kulkarni’s wife Shrilaxmi (32) was admitted to Kalyanpurkar Nursing Home, owned by Dr. Sabita Kalyanpurkar, on January 4, 2008, where she gave birth to a baby girl. Shrilaxmi, who suffered heavy bleeding after the delivery, breathed her last.
‘Appeal rejected’
Addressing presspersons along with advocate Sunil Kulkarni and social activist Bhaskar Jituri, Mr. Kulkarni said although his contention about deficient medical service was upheld by the district consumer forum, it had asked Dr. Sabita to pay a compensation of Rs. 3 lakh.
“However I approached the State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission seeking more compensation, while Dr. Sabita appealed against the district forum’s order. The State commission rejected both mine and Dr. Sabita’s appeal,” Mr. Kulkarni said.
While Dr. Sabita approached the the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, Mr. Kulkarni filed a revision petition. “The commission on May 28, 2015 directed Dr. Sabita to pay a compensation of Rs. 15 lakhs in addition to the Rs. 3 lakh within six weeks of the receipt of the order,” he said.
