Having established Dr T.M.A. Pai Chair in Mathematics a year ago, Manipal University has taken a further step to initiate and cultivate research in Mathematics by organising a five-day workshop focusing on trends in Algebraic Geometry here.
The workshop with the theme ‘The Manipal Days in Mathematics’ concludes on January 9. Some of the top mathematicians in the country are looking at the way forward in promoting the subject at the workshop. Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday, K. Ramnarayan, Vice-Chancellor of Manipal University, said, “We are privileged to have M.S. Narasimhan, a Padma Bhushan recipient as the Chair in Mathematics at our university. We are confident that together we will be able to initiate and cultivate high quality research in Mathematics at Manipal University in our own unique way. The workshop is a first step in this direction,” he said.
Apart from Prof. Narasimhan from Centre for Applicable Mathematics, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Bengaluru, other eminent Mathematicians include C.S. Sheshadri, also a Padma Bhushan recipient, and S. Ramanan are taking part in the workshop.
The expository sessions will be conducted by 15 experts from the country and abroad including O. Garcia-Prada from Spain, P. Nang from the Gabonese Republic and other researchers. A lecture on ‘Euclidean geometry and modern physics’ was delivered by Nitin Nitsure from the School of Mathematics, TIFR, Mumbai, on Tuesday. Another lecture on ‘Geometry beyond Euclid’ would be delivered by Prof. Narasimhan at 6 p.m. on January 8.
