Mango lovers will get an opportunity to buy the fruit directly from growers at the Mango Mela, which began on the premises of the Department of Horticulture on Railway Station Road here on Saturday.

The mela has been organi s ed jointly by the Horticulture Department and Karnataka State Mango Development and Marketing Corporation to facilitate sale and purchase of mango fruits between growers and buyers. It will be on till May 29.

Dharwad Zilla Panchayat chief executive officer B.C. Satish inaugurated the mela and called upon customers to make use of this event to take home mangoes of good quality. He said the fruits sold in the market are often ripened using chemicals, but at the mela, customers can buy mangoes ripened organically. Zilla panchayat president Vijayalakshmi Patil, additional Deputy Commissioner Suresh Itnal and others were present.

Over 50 mango growers from Dharwad, Belagavi, Uttara Kannada, Bagalkot and Haveri are participating in the mela. Customers will get an opportunity to buy over 35 varieties of mango, including Alfonso, Kalmi, Baigampalli, Kareyishada, Mallika, Totapuri, and Neelam. The price will range from ₹150 to ₹250 a kg, which is relatively lower than the market rates, officials said.

Last year, there was good response to the Mango Mela organised by the Horticulture Department. The participating farmers sold 64 tonnes of mango for a total of ₹1.29 crore, they added.
