Man sentenced to 10-year jail on charge of stealing gold chain

Principal District and Sessions Court here sentenced a person to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment on the charge of stealing a gold chain from a woman.

According to the police, Manjunathachari (33), resident of Ragigudda locality here had barged into the house of Sharadamma (60) at Vinobha Nagar locality in May 2007. It was alleged that he threw chili powder into her eyes, stabbed her and escaped with a gold chain she was wearing. The victim had lodged a complaint with the Vinobha Nagar police in this connection.

Cases under Sections 378, 380 (theft) and 457 (trespassing and house-breaking) of the Indian Penal Code were booked against him. Manjunathachari was later arrested by the police after a few days.

As the charges against the accused were proved, the court sentenced him to 10-year imprisonment, besides slapping a fine of Rs. 10,000 on him.
