The K.R. Pet subdivision police have arrested M. Prakash (30), panipuri vendor, on the charge of raping and murdering nine-year-old Mehek Banu in a classroom of government higher primary school for girls on the outskirts of K.R. Pet on April 17.
The police said that the arrested was a native of Huligere in Channarayapatna taluk of Hassan district.
Bhushan Gulabrao Borase, Superintendent of Police (Mandya), said that the arrested had confessed to have committed the crime.
The victim, a class III student at government Urdu school in K.R. Pet and a resident of Subhash Nagar, used to visit Prakash’s panipuri shop to buy chats. On that fateful day, when she visited the shop, the arrested allegedly took the girl to a classroom and committed the crime.
After committing the crime, the arrested had shifted to Pandavapura.
