A man was conned into losing Rs. 10 lakh on the pretext of buying ancient gold coins in Anandapuram village, Sagar taluk.

When Srinivas Babu, a resident of Chickballapur was in Dharmasthala a few days ago, a person introduced himself to him as Raju, a resident of Sampekatte village, Hosanagar taluk.

Mr. Raju had called Mr. Babu on the phone recently and told him that a pitcher full of ancient gold coins was found during the house renovation work of his friend.

Mr. Raju said that his friend wanted to sell him the coins as he needed money for his daughter’s marriage.

He requested Mr. Babu to purchase them.

On February 22, Mr. Raju met Mr. Babu in Togarsi village, Shikaripur taluk, and offered him five gold coins as a sample and received an amount of Rs 10,000 from him.

Mr. Babu got these gold coins tested with a goldsmith and found them to be original. Mr. Raju then asked Mr. Babu to come to Anandapuram to collect the remaining coins.

At a deserted place on the outskirts of Anandapuram, Mr. Babu handed over Rs. 10 lakh cash to Mr. Raju who in turn gave him a plastic bag filled with coins and left the place immediately.

After getting the coins examined, Mr. Babu found them to be counterfeit.

The victim has lodged a complaint with Sagar Rural police station against Mr. Raju in this connection.
