A construction worker was arrested by the Sagar Rural police on Saturday on charges of stealing his wife’s jewellery.

The arrested Gurumurthy is a resident of Chipli-Lingadahalli village. He had lodged a complaint with the Sagar Rural police on May 22 that jewellery worth Rs. 1.27 lakh, which belonged to his wife, had gone missing from his house. The complainant had said that the jewellery was placed in the almirah on May 17 and when the almirah was opened on May 21 the gold was missing.

When the police visited the spot along with a dog squad and finger print experts, they found that everything was intact in the almirah. During investigation, the parents and wife of the arrested had told the police that they had not locked the house from May 17 to 21. When the police quizzed Mr. Gurumurthy as part of the investigation, he reportedly confessed to committing the crime.

The police said that the jewellery was a present to his wife from her parents and she was reluctant to let Gurumurthy’s family members wear it. The Sagar Rural police have registered cases under Section 380 (theft in dwelling house), 454 (house-breaking to commit offence) and 457 (house-breaking by night to commit offence) of the Indian Penal Code against the arrested.
