The first and foremost duty of advocates is to ensure justice, says Chief Justice of IndiaH.L. Dattu.

Providing justice to the needy is a sacred job and advocates should always try to maintain the sanctity of the profession by avoiding commercialisation, Chief Justice of India H.L. Dattu has said.

He was here on Saturday to inaugurate the golden jubilee celebrations of Saraswathi Law College. Mr. Dattu said that people approach courts owing to reasons such as difference of opinion. The first and foremost duty of advocates was to ensure justice to them as early as possible.

Law graduates could reach their goal in the field only by sustained efforts, honesty and humanity.

Students should make systematic use of the available resources to expand the horizon of their knowledge and reach expected goals in life, he said.

Union Minister of State for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises G.M. Siddeshwar said that the people were losing hope in the judicial system owing to the inordinate delay in solving cases. There were instances wherein the people hesitated to approach the court owing to the delay in getting justice.

Advocates should make sustained efforts to solve cases as early as possible and provide speedy justice, he said.

B.N. Chandrappa, MP, said that the life of Mr. Dattu was a classic example for the present generation. “Born in a small village, he fought against all odds to reach a dignified position in life,” he said.

District in-charge Minister H. Anjaneya, Saraswathi Education Institute Chairman H. Hanumantappa, City Municipal Council president B. Kantraj and Saraswathi Law College Principal Ushalatha were present.
