For the first time after its formation around five years ago, the State government has appointed a chairman for the Vijayanagar Area Development Authority (VADA).

Chatriki Mahabaleshwar of Yeshwantnagar in Sandur taluk has been appointed as its first chairman. Until now, the Deputy Commissioner was its chairman.

VADA came into existence because of the initiative taken by mining baron G. Janardhan Reddy, as the then Minister for Tourism, Infrastructure Development and district in-charge. The purpose of its formation was to give a boost to industrialisation, particularly the steel industries.

The government has also appointed H.M. Basha and Guruswamy of Toranagal, Divya of Kuditini village, and architect Harijan Mallikarjun of Gadiganur, as its members.
