Low-lying areas flooded as heavy rain lashes city

MCC personnel help residents bail out water from homes

October 13, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:46 am IST - MYSURU:

Several low-lying areas in Narasimharaja Assembly constituency in Mysuru were flooded after heavy rain lashed parts of the city on Sunday evening.

Residents of Bharath Nagar, Muneshwaranagar and A.J. Block had a tough time draining the rainwater out of their houses. Mysuru City Corporation personnel helped the residents bail out the water.

Operation

“The operation to drain out the water using machines continued till Monday morning,” an official in MCC Control Room told The Hindu .

Nagaraj, Assistant Commissioner of MCC’s Zone 8, told The Hindu that the houses in A.J. Block had been constructed below the level of the drainage. “Flooding takes place in this area whenever it rains. We need to find a solution to this perennial problem,” he said.

In some of the affected areas, the filth from the underground drainage entered houses as the drainage was blocked with the waste material in the rainwater.

Mr. Nagaraj, who inspected the houses in the Pourakarmika Colony in ward numbers 49 and 50, said the walls of three houses had become weak and were on the verge of collapse. The dwellers have been advised to vacate the houses, he said.

Lifted

Meanwhile, a car was washed into a storm water drain in Udayagiri during the heavy rain. “The car, which was parked on the edge of the road, fell into the drain in the rain,” Mr. Nagaraj said adding that it was later lifted.
