The Advocates’ Association, Bengaluru, on Tuesday, threatened to resort to hunger strike if the Supreme Court and Union government failed to fill 38 vacant posts of judges in the High Court of Karnataka by December 15.
A resolution was passed by the association in a meeting with the designated senior counsel on the issue of vacant posts.
Pointing out that the present 26 judges of the High Court are “working under tremendous stress” and are “overburdened” with cases, the meeting noted that increasing number of pendency of cases and large vacancies in the posts of judges has virtually created a “chaotic” situation in the High Court. The sanctioned strength of posts of judges is 62.
It has been decided in the meeting to meet the Chief Justice of India, the Prime Minister and the Union Law Minister to apprise him of the situation and to appoint judges from amongst the recommendations made by the High Court’s collegium in this regard.
Meanwhile, a petition has been moved in the High Court seeking a direction to the Union government and the Supreme Court to initiate and complete the process of appointing judges.
