‘Laws will prevent only a third of corruption’

January 18, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:57 am IST - SANDUR (BALLARI DISTRICT):

Sharat Saksena, former Additional Director-General of Police, is of the view that granting autonomy to a few important departments will help bring down corruption.

Delivering a lecture on ‘Good corporate governance’, organised by Sandur Manganese and Iron Ore Limited here on Saturday, he said that ushering in administrative reforms would not be of help as implementing them was a major problem. Enacting stringent laws might help tackle about a third of the total corruption level.

“What is necessary is to grant autonomy to a few important departments – Police, Income Tax and Vigilance – through a piece of legislation, especially with regard to framing transfer policy and postings by forming a committee comprising of members having equal ranks,” he said.
