Kumbh Mela to begin at T. Narsipur on Feb. 20

A three-day Kumbh Mela will be held at T. Narsipur near here from February 20.

Speaking to reporters after holding a preparatory meeting here on Tuesday, seer of Suttur Mutt Sri Shivarathri Deshikendra Swami said an estimated 10 lakh to 15 lakh people are likely to attend the mela from across the country. About 250 saints are also expected to attend, he said.

The tradition of holding Kumbh Mela at T. Narsipur, where River Cauvery meets the Kapila, began in 1989 when pontiffs of the region, drawing inspiration from the Kumbh Mela in the north, wished to give people of south India an opportunity to participate in such an event.

Held once in three years here, the coming Kumbh Mela was the tenth such event.

However, the Kumbh Mela will clash with the elections to the zilla and taluk panchayats, which are scheduled to be held on February 20.

Superintendent of Police Abhinav Khare said the organisers had not scheduled any major event or programme of Kumbh Mela on February 20. “They have agreed to schedule important programmes only on February 21 and 22.”

Deployment of police personnel for the mela will not be an issue, he said.

Various religious mutts, including Sri Kailasashrama, Adichunchanagiri Mutt, Sri Suttur Mutt, Avadhoota Datta Peetha, and Omkarashrama, will be involved in making arrangements, along with the government. Suttur Mutt and Adichunchanagiri Mutt will offer food to all devotees, while various government agencies have been vested with the responsibility of providing drinking water, restrooms, lodging, and so on.
