Kumaraswamy sees ‘conspiracy’ involving BJP leaders

Making it clear that he will not yield to the Opposition BJP’s demand for tendering an apology to its leader B.S. Yeddyurappa, Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy on Thursday launched a counter-attack at the BJP. He reiterated that BJP leaders were trying to delay the farm loan-waiver scheme by “using their links with nationalised banks”.

“There are no doubts on the conspiracy by BJP leaders to delay the farm loan-waiver scheme,” Mr. Kumaraswamy said at a press conference here after the Opposition BJP stalled proceedings in the Assembly seeking his apology for this remark. “Such a doubt arose following the attitude of banks as well as BJP leaders towards farm loan-waiver scheme,” he said.

He said nationalised banks had recently issued advertisements informing defaulters of offering a loan settlement by reducing the interest component if they come forward to repay. “But when the government itself is trying to repay for defaulting farmers, banks are not showing interest. Does it not lead to doubts that some conspiracy is on?” he sought to know.

At the same time, he asserted that the State would not wait for the banks to offer a scheme if they continued to show “indifference” towards the government and farmers. He made it clear that he was not looking for any financial help from the Centre. Refuting allegations that the State’s loan-waiver scheme was a non-starter, he said the BJP government in Gujarat had sent its officials to study the State’s model of loan waiver as it was impressed by it.

Maintaining that he had not made any “unparliamentary” remarks which needed an apology, Mr. Kumaraswamy said, “Why should I apologise? Should I apologise for taking up farm loan waiver?”
