KSCPCR: Ban homework for lower primary

Child rights body wants to ease pressure on students of classes 1 to 5

The Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (KSCPCR) wants the Department of Primary and Secondary Education to ban schools from assigning homework to students in the lower primary section — from classes 1 to 5. It plans to take this up with the department on the grounds that the move will ease the pressure on young minds. In May this year, the department had issued an order that students in classes 1 and 2 should not be given homework. Commission members claim that not only should the government extend this up to class 5, it should also monitor schools as many are violating the order and still giving homework to children.

“Students are getting bogged down by homework. Parents have complained to us that students as young as six years have to sit for over two hours to complete their homework. Learning should be fun and students should not view it as a tiresome task,” said Fr. Antony Sebastian, chairperson of the commission, adding that in a quick survey, the commission found that most of the homework assigned to students was not age appropriate. “We are in the process of conducting research on the psychological impact of homework on students,” he said. However, mental health experts said a total ban on homework may not be the best solution. K. John Vijay Sagar, professor, Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at NIMHANS, said schools need to think of alternative ways to impart education to students.

“The kind of homework that schools give needs introspection. Currently, there is too much writing at a very early stage, which is not in pace with the development of the child. By six years, students start understanding concepts and can be given some writing work,” he said, adding that if homework is reduced, schools need to find ways to improve learning in the classroom.
