Activists of Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS) staged a dharna in front of the office of the Mining and Geology Department here on Thursday demanding action against illegal sand extraction in the district.

Such extraction of sand should be stopped to preserve tanks, the only source of water in the region, the sangha said.

The protesters alleged that the authorities concerned are letting those extracting sand illegally go scot-free. They charged the officials with receiving bribes from those involved in such illegal activities.

The officials do not take action even after the sangha “seizes” vehicles and other material used for transporting sand and filtering sand and hands them over to them, they said.

The protesters dispersed after the Town Police assured them of convening a meeting with the departments concerned.
