Kodagu ZP to focus on rehabilitation of flood victims

The Kodagu Zilla Panchayat will focus on rehabilitation of flood-affected people in the district following the cessation of the monsoon period.

This was decided at the maiden meeting conducted in the new ZP office on Thursday. The ZP President B.A. Harish said since the rains have ceased, all rehabilitation works should be taken up and completed on a war footing. He said several new programmes will also be announced in due course.

The officials were directed to take up the construction of new hostel buildings for students, timely release of scholarship and completion of the housing projects.

There are scores of families bereft of a house and do not have site for construction, The ZP members should reach out to such people and ensure that the construction work was expedited, said Mr. Harish. He said even the community halls constructed in villages should be put to use to tide over the exigencies faced by the homeless.

A few members raised the issue of encroachment of government land in rural areas and said that the government should get the plots cleared and use them to rehabilitate the homeless. The ZP members were also told to ensure that schools affected by floods or badly damaged due to landslips have been repaired and well furnished to ensure that the teaching-learning processes were not affected. In case any building was found to be fragile or dilapidated, they should be repaired or rebuilt.

Encroachments

Referring to the encroachment of government land, ZP member Kavitha Prabhakar said the government school at Bhagamandala had 8 acres of land but it had dwindled to 2 acres over the years and wanted the encroachments to be cleared.

Another member, C.K.Bopanna, said there were complaints of cracks and leakages from many schools and wanted themt to be set right. He said many of the schools were converted to relief camps and this has affected the students and hence wanted the camps to be shifted to community halls. There was a reference to the construction of solid waste treatment plant close to the Cauvery and the members took objections to it on the grounds that such facilities should not be on the river bank. The ZP DHO K. Mohan clarified that directives have been issued to relocate the project.

Funds misuse

The Kodagu Zilla Panchayat also decided to constitute a committee to inquire into the allegations of misuse of nearly ₹28 crore released for flood relief.

The funds were allegedly transferred to a private account by an official who is being investigated but the elected body decided to constitute a full-fledged committee to probe the issue.
