A new version of the popular Nudi software, which has taken Kannada to the digital world, will be launched by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah soon.
Addressing the media on Tuesday, Kannada Development Authority (KDA) chairman S.G. Siddaramaiah said the new software will also help techies and students who find it difficult to express themselves in Kannada in the virtual world. The KDA has brought out the new version with the support of Karnataka Ganaka Parishat, and the launch is expected in the next two weeks.
Among the features of the new version is an expanded spellcheck that will allow users to check the spellings of over 1.6 lakh Kannada words. The previous version had a dictionary of 60,000 words.
The current version of Nudi is the fifth, and the app has been downloaded more than 50,000 times. However, the programme remains problematic as it struggles to catch up with advances in software. For instance, the 32-bit version (for older systems) and the 64-bit version (for systems using Windows 10 and Microsoft Office Suite 7) are in two different packages, and both come with issues when operated on Apple laptops. The new version will address these problems.
Why call Basavanagudi Bull Temple?
Upset with the incorrect translation of Kannada names into English and the installation of signage in Hindi, the Kannada Development Authority has sought an explanation from the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).
“Basavanagudi is translated to Bull Temple, which is factually wrong. Why don’t they retain the name in English and help outsiders to understand the culture of the land?” asked KDA chairman S.G. Siddaramaiah on Tuesday. Various other traditional names have been incorrectly translated into English by the BBMP.
