The valedictory function of the silver jubilee celebrations of Kannada University, scheduled to be held on January 31 and February 1, has been postponed abruptly.

Enquiries revealed that the function was postponed following protests by students, under the banner of Bayalu Chintana Samshodhana Vidyarthi Balaga, and professors, including Rahamat Tarikere, H.D. Prashant, Amaresh Nugadoni, and Mogalli Ganesh, who have submitted letters separately to the Vice-Chancellor expressing their dissent over inviting journalist Vishweshwar Bhat for releasing books during the celebrations.

They have accused Mr. Bhat of having views that disrespect women.

University Vice-Chancellor Mallika Ghanti, however, said the reason for the postponement was mainly because preparations had not been completed.

The invitation for the function had already been printed and distributed. January 31 was dedicated to ‘Kavi-Kavya Sambhrama’, which was to be inaugurated by ‘Nadoja’ Chennaveera Kanavi and a host of poets were to participate in three sessions.

The following day was silver jubilee valedictory celebrations to be inaugurated by former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. The release of books, brought out by the university to mark the silver jubilee celebrations, was to be done by Mr. Bhat.
