The activists of Janata Dal (Secular) took out a torchlight march in the city on Saturday to register their protest against hike in the fuel prices.

The procession commenced from Amir Ahmed Circle, passed through Nehru Road and Balaraj Urs Road and concluded at Mahaveera Circle.

Addressing the protesters at Gopi Circle, R.M. Manjunatha Gowda, president of JD(S) district unit, said that controlling the prices of fuel and essential commodities had figured in the manifesto of Bharatiya Janata Party for the 2014 Lok Sabha election. It is unfortunate that after coming to power, the BJP has failed to fulfill the promise.

The prices of crude oil had declined in the international market but owing to the flawed economic policies adopted by the BJP-lead NDA government at the Centre, the fuel prices are moving northwards in India. The frequent upward revision in the prices of petrol, diesel and domestic cooking gas has resulted in corresponding hike in the prices of other essential commodities also, he said.

Srikanth M., general secretary of JD(S) State unit, and Nagaraj Kankari and Sathyanarayana Raju, members of Shivamogga City Corporation, took part in the protest.
