The Udupi district unit of the Janata Dal (Secular) released the first list of its 13 candidates for the elections to the Udupi City Municipal Council (CMC) and the Karkala Town Municipal Council here on Tuesday.
The party candidates for eight wards of the Udupi CMC are Ramesh Shetty (Moodabettu ward), K. Ramesh Shetty (Shiribeedu), Rohith (Karambally), Anita Shetty (Ajjarkadu), Chandrakala Chitpady (Kasturba Nagar), Jayakar Poojary (Indira Nagar), Shashidhar M. Amin (Vadabhandeshwara) and Hareef (Gundibailu).
The five candidates for the Karkala TMC are Naseer Hussain (Banglegudde, Kaje), Umesh (Salmar Jarigudde), K.P. Shivanand (Dana Shale), Mohammed Jubair (Taluk Kacheri, Kabettu) and Sachin Devadiga (Kabettu Rotary).
Addressing presspersons here, Yogish Shetty, president of the district unit of the party, said that the party would release the second list of candidates comprising names candidates for Kundapur TMC and Saligram Town Panchayat elections in a couple of days in Kundapur. The candidates will be selected after ward meetings. The selected candidates had begun their campaigning.
Both the BJP and the Congress had failed to provide proper governance in the Udupi CMC. Hence, people want a change here and they would vote for the Janata Dal(S). There was no underground drainage system in wards on the outskirts of Udupi and there was no proper maintenance of street lamps in the city, Mr. Shetty said.
Lack of coordination between various departments in the municipal council was responsible for the lack of progress in the city. Municipal staff behaved rudely with people. The party had a vision to develop Udupi into a beautiful city, Mr. Shetty said.
‘No tie-up’
To a question, Mr. Shetty said that the party had no tie-up with the Congress for the local polls nor was there any “friendly fight”. The party would announce its names for the rest of the wards for the Udupi municipal council polls in the coming days. The Bahujan Samaj Party had cooperated with the Janata Dal(S) during the Assembly polls and this cooperation would continue for the local body polls in the district, he said.
Jayakumar Parkala, Vasudeva Rao, Sachin, Prakash Shetty, Pradeep and Raviraj Salian, all party leaders, were present.
