The activists of Janata Dal (Secular) staged a protest in the city on Tuesday demanding conferring land ownership rights on farmers displaced from Bhadra reservoir project.

Addressing the protest meet, R.M. Manjunatha Gowda, president of JD(S) district unit, said that more than 500 families that were displaced from Bhadra reservoir project commissioned in the year 1965 were rehabilitated in Uralihalli, Totadakere, Lakkinakoppa and surrounding villages. The farmers were allotted land near these villages by the State government for cultivation, but ownership rights were not granted. The farmers are denied credit facilities by banks as they do not possess documents to prove their ownership on the land.

He demanded the district administration to take measures to address the problem at the earliest.
