JD(S) bags president post in Tumakuru ZP

Though the Congress emerged as the single largest party in the Tumakuru Zilla Panchayat elections, it failed to bag the posts of president and vice-president in the ZP.

Instead, with the Janata Dal (Secular) and the Bharatiya Janata Party going into an alliance, the JD(S), with only 14 seats, bagged the post of president and the BJP, with 19 seats got the vice-president’s post in the ZP elections held on Wednesday.

JD(S) ZP member Latha Ravikumar was elected as president and Sharada Narasimhamurthy of the BJP was elected as vice-president.

This is considered a setback for Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs T.B. Jayachandra and Home Minister G. Parameshwara, both of who hail from the district, as they failed to bring their party to power in the ZP.

The Tumakuru Zilla Panchayat was a hung body with Congress getting 23 seats, Bharatiya Janata Party 19, JD(S) 14, and 1 Independent. With a total of 57 seats, a single party had to get 29 seats to come to power.
