KBJNL released 1.73 lakh cusecs of water from the Narayanpur reservoir into the Krishna on Thursday.

Neelakantarayanagaddi Island residents are still stranded as the Krishna is in spate. The Deputy Commissioner held a meeting of officials at Narayanpur to ascertain the flood situation.

Meanwhile, officials of the Krishna Bhagya Jala Nigam Limited (KBJNL) released more quantum of water from the reservoir in Hunsagi taluk of the district on Thursday.

According to official sources, 1.73 lakh cusecs of water was discharged from the reservoir into the Krishna on Thursday when 1.73 lakh cusecs of water was the inflow recorded from the Alamatti dam into reservoir.

The water level in the reservoir stood at 491.30 m against a full reservoir level of 492.25 m. Of the 30 gates in the dam, 16 were opened to release water, the sources added. Neelakantarayanagaddi Island residents remained stranded on Thursday too and could not access the outside world as the Krishna is in spate. After six residents returned to the island from the mainland on Wednesday, none from the island were willing to take the risk to come to the mainland on Thursday.

Lakshman, a resident of the island, who spoke to The Hindu over phone, said that they are worried about the health condition of pregnant women on the island. One of three women is into her eighth month of pregnancy and she may need health care any time, he said.

Meanwhile, the district administration has kept a boat ready to launch services to the island from the mainland, enabling residents there to come to the mainland for their domestic work.

The boat accompanied by a team of officials and other staff was brought from Raichur district on Thursday.

Deputy Commissioner J. Manjunath told The Hindu that the boat service will be launched after ascertaining the situation.

Officials of the Health and Family Welfare Department have received information about people who are in need of medical care. They will supply the required medicine once the boat service is started.

Mr. Manjunath, who reviewed the water level in the reservoir at around 6.20 p.m., said that he would hold discussions with the officials of KBJNL before initiating further action.

The Krishna under the Kollur bridge near Kollur village in Shahapur taluk is just short of six ft before it overflows onto the bridge. If the bridge submerges, the Raichur-Kalaburagi main road will be cut off and standing crops on hundreds acres of agriculture land are likely to inundated.

Shivareddy, a farmer, said that “we are worrying about crop loss, particularly green gram, if the Krishna floods again.”
