The Infosys Foundation has decided to contribute to the restoration of historical monuments at Melkote of Pandavapura taluk in Mandya district.

Melkote, one among the many historical pilgrimage centres in Karnataka, has over 100 archeologically significant monuments such as ponds, ‘kalyanis’ (step ponds), temples, mantaps, and other structures.

Many are on the verge of collapse or have been overrun by weeds.

It is believed that Sri Ramanujacharya, the 10th century social reformer, lived for many years at a place in Melkote, which is now the Yathiraja Mutt at Melkote.

An integrated development plan to develop Melkote at a cost of ₹500 crore was prepared and submitted to the State government in July 2015. Nevertheless, it is still in limbo.

On Sunday, Sudha Murty, chairperson, Infosys Foundation, visited Melkote and expressed interest in contributing to the restoration of historical monuments across the village. Accompanied by C.S. Puttaraju, Minor Irrigation Minister, S.R. Mahesh, Tourism Minister, Deputy Commissioner N. Manjushri, and others, Ms. Murty inspected the monuments.

A meeting was also convened to provide a brief picture about the historical significance of monuments at Melkote and what to expect in terms of restoration.

Ms. Murty told presspersons that Infosys will restore the monuments without harming the historical and heritage importance of the monuments.

According to her, Infosys will also commence the construction works of houses for Kodagu flood victims once the State government allots the lands.

Mr. Puttaraju said the government will extend all support to Infosys to carry out the works, while Mr. Mahesh said the Minor Irrigation and Tourism Departments will extend financial support.
